Tom Brady getting ‘personal days’ during Buccaneers season

Tom Brady’s training camp break isn’t the only one he’ll get this season.

The Buccaneers quarterback, 45, will get every Wednesday during the season as a rest day, which NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also described as a “personal day.” Blaine Gabbert will take practice reps on those days instead.

Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said Brady won’t be the only veteran to get rest days.

“For most players, it’s important,” Bowles said Friday in reference to practice time. “But I think when you play in the league a certain amount of time and you prepare a certain way, it’s not necessary to practice that guy all the time. You’re doing to practice, but you’re not going to practice all the time. You’ll get a day off here and there because it is a long season.”

Brady noted following Tampa’s Week 1 win over the Cowboys that he felt more sore than usual.

“There’s no margin for error when you’re 45,” Brady said on his “Let’s Go!” podcast. “You know, you take hits and you feel every hit. When you’re younger, your body’s a lot different.

“And when you’re 45, your body changes a lot. So what am I dealing with now? I woke up today going, ‘Holy s–t, there was a few hits.”

Later in the week, he told reporters he felt fine.

During training camp, Brady took a pre-planned vacation to the Bahamas to spend time with his family amid a spat with his wife, Gisele Bündchen, over the quarterback’s decision to unretire for the 2022 season. It doesn’t seem like the midweek rest is meant to serve the same goal, but it is another sign that Tom vs. Time is starting to tilt in favor of the clock.
